No Retreat, No Surrender
One American's Fight
Tom DeLay tells his own story about his life and how he became a Congressman. He tells the sad story of how political opponents attacked him through the courts since they couldn't win against him with the voters. Three episodes in his life color his thinking: 1. Being held captive by Fidel Castro's thugs in Havana during a stopover on a flight home from Venezuela in 1959 showed him the face of tyranny. 2. Being enthralled as a young man by Barry Goldwater's speech to the 1964 Republican National Convention confirmed him as a lifelong conservative. 3. Becoming a born-again Christian after his first term in Washington changed his life and view of the world completely. His five suggestions for how conservative Republicans can positively affect our Country are worthy of serious study. A surprisingly good book. Beyond its central premise, the book can be read through the connected lenses of Nonfiction. Those themes offer useful points of attention as the characters, ideas, or world develop, especially where the book complicates the expectations of its primary category.

Works well for a focused weekend or a few concentrated sittings.
Begin with its place in Nonfiction, then notice where the book resists that label.
Read for connection, not completion.
Mark one passage that sharpens the book's central concern and one that complicates it. That tension often reveals more than a quick summary.
Three questions to carry with you
- Whose perspective organizes the story, and whose perspective remains outside it?
- Which sources or lived experiences carry the author’s central argument?
- How does the book change the way you understand its larger subject?
