Formation of the Christian Scriptures

by Margaret Baxter

Published 1988146 pagesISBN 978-0-2810-4362-0

The Formation of the Christian Scriptures is the second volume in a two-part introduction to the New Testament. The first volume, Jesus Christ: His Life and His Church, contains an account of events, beginning with the life and teaching of Jesus and ending with the leaders of the early church writing letters to Christians. This second volume is concerned with the writing of the Gospels and also traces the processes by which the various parts of the New Testament as we know it came to be written and put together, accepted as Scripture, and then translated. A final chapter considers the many modern English language versions that exist today. The International Study Guides (ISGs) are clear and accessible resources, contextual and ecumenical in content and missional in direction. The contributors are theological educators who come from different countries and different religious backgrounds and bring practical emphasis alongside contemporary scholarly reflection. Beyond its central premise, the book can be read through the connected lenses of Nonfiction. Those themes offer useful points of attention as the characters, ideas, or world develop, especially where the book complicates the expectations of its primary category.

A more thoughtful way into this book

This guide uses the edition details and category signals above to help you choose deliberately. It does not replace the author's work or a full review.

Good to know

Works well for a focused weekend or a few concentrated sittings.

Begin with its place in Nonfiction, then notice where the book resists that label.

Try this reading approach

Read for connection, not completion.

Mark one passage that sharpens the book's central concern and one that complicates it. That tension often reveals more than a quick summary.

Three questions to carry with you

  1. Whose perspective organizes the story, and whose perspective remains outside it?
  2. Which sources or lived experiences carry the author’s central argument?
  3. How does the book change the way you understand its larger subject?
