Fordism and Flexibility

Divisions and Change

by Nigel Gilbert, Roger Burrows

Published 1992206 pagesISBN 978-0-3120-6871-4

"That the 1980s were a decade of significant economic change is not in any doubt. However, how best to interpret these changes has become a source of much controversy. Three related concepts have recently emerged around which there has been a dramatic crystallization: Fordism, post-Fordism, and, supposedly linking the two, various manifestations of economic flexibility. There has been, it is suggested, a profound change in the labor process towards the "flexible worker" and in the labour market towards a "flexible workforce"." "Three approaches to explain these changes are especially important and provide the major focus for this book: Marxist regulation theory; the notion of flexible specialization associated with the "new" institutional economics; and the model of the flexible firm derived from the managerialist literature. In the book, the diverse claims made by these three approaches are subject to empirical and theoretical investigation and their wider implications are examined in relation to emerging patterns of work in advanced societies."--Jacket.

Beyond its central premise, the book can be read through the connected lenses of Nonfiction. Those themes offer useful points of attention as the characters, ideas, or world develop, especially where the book complicates the expectations of its primary category.

A more thoughtful way into this book

This guide uses the edition details and category signals above to help you choose deliberately. It does not replace the author's work or a full review.

Good to know

Works well for a focused weekend or a few concentrated sittings.

Begin with its place in Nonfiction, then notice where the book resists that label.

Try this reading approach

Read for connection, not completion.

Mark one passage that sharpens the book's central concern and one that complicates it. That tension often reveals more than a quick summary.

Three questions to carry with you

  1. Whose perspective organizes the story, and whose perspective remains outside it?
  2. Which sources or lived experiences carry the author’s central argument?
  3. How does the book change the way you understand its larger subject?
