Three Tales of Tenure and Terror

by James Hynes - undifferentiated

Published 1998352 pagesISBN 978-0-3121-8696-8

In "Queen of the Jungle," young academics Paul and Elizabeth appear to enjoy a comfortable, tenure-track marriage, commuting between their jobs on either side of the Midwest. When Paul begins an affair with a graduate student, Elizabeth's cat Charlotte deviously arranges revenge for her absent owner and teaches Paul a lesson about infidelity that can't be learned at any university. "99" is the story of Gregory Eyck, a cultural anthropologist whose conference on the death of Captain Cook fails miserably and threatens his career. Eyck accepts an assignment in England with the BBC and travels to a mysterious town near Stonehenge where he finds himself an unwitting participant/observer in a bizarre druidic ritual. And in "Casting the Runes," a junior history professor named Victoria Dunning finds that she must defend not only her postmodernist ideology but also her very life from the greed and sorcery of an older, senior professor.

Beyond its central premise, the book can be read through the connected lenses of Fiction. Those themes offer useful points of attention as the characters, ideas, or world develop, especially where the book complicates the expectations of its primary category.

A more thoughtful way into this book

This guide uses the edition details and category signals above to help you choose deliberately. It does not replace the author's work or a full review.

Good to know

A comfortable full-length choice for steady daily reading.

Begin with its place in Fiction, then notice where the book resists that label.

Try this reading approach

Read for connection, not completion.

Mark one passage that sharpens the book's central concern and one that complicates it. That tension often reveals more than a quick summary.

Three questions to carry with you

  1. What does the central character want, and what do they misunderstand about that desire?
  2. Which detail or relationship changes how you interpret the story?
  3. What feeling or question does the book leave with you after the plot moves on?
