Bite marks

a vampire testament

by Terence Taylor

Published 2009394 pagesISBN 978-0-3123-8525-5

A teenage runaway is killed and brought back to life to feed on her bastard child, by a sadistic vampire who's stalked her family for decades with the pathology of a serial killer. The undead infant escapes, triggering a citywide search for a vampire baby whose existence threatens to expose the entire vampire society. And they will stop at nothing to make sure that doesn't happen. Bite Marks is an urban horror novel set in the downtown art world/ club scene of late 80s New York. At heart, it's the story of Steven and Lori, artist and writer, a couple working their way through a bad break up, but bound by a contract to do an illustrated coffee table book on vampires. When they stumble across the real thing their feelings for each other intensify as they're reunited to battle monsters they scarcely believe exist.

Beyond its central premise, the book can be read through the connected lenses of Fiction, Fantasy. Those themes offer useful points of attention as the characters, ideas, or world develop, especially where the book complicates the expectations of its primary category.

A more thoughtful way into this book

This guide uses the edition details and category signals above to help you choose deliberately. It does not replace the author's work or a full review.

Begin with its place in Fiction, then notice where the book resists that label.

Try this reading approach

Read for connection, not completion.

Mark one passage that sharpens the book's central concern and one that complicates it. That tension often reveals more than a quick summary.

Three questions to carry with you

  1. What does the central character want, and what do they misunderstand about that desire?
  2. Which detail or relationship changes how you interpret the story?
  3. What feeling or question does the book leave with you after the plot moves on?
