Fractal characterisation of nuclear morphology in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (dysplasia and carcinoma in situ) in humans

by Mary Michele Baron

Published 1994ISBN 978-0-3159-8394-6

A consistent, quantitative, observer-independent method of characterising the nuclear morphology of squamous epithelial cells representative of Pap smears diagnosed as normal, CIN I, CIN II and CIN III is described. Two hundred and forty-two nuclei were grouped according to their diagnostic classification and subjected to automated image analysis. The method is based on t he calculation of the boundary fractal dimension of the nuclei as derived from the equipaced exploration technique. Statistical analysis of the collected data confirmed that the fractal dimensions associated witht the boundary profiles of all nuclei became greater with increasing grades of dysplasia. The results of the present study suggest that boundary fractal dimensions may prove to be a useful system of classification of Pap smear diagnoses and may also lead to a standardized method of reporting and communicating Pap smear results.

Beyond its central premise, the book can be read through the connected lenses of Nonfiction. Those themes offer useful points of attention as the characters, ideas, or world develop, especially where the book complicates the expectations of its primary category.

Try this reading approach

Read for connection, not completion.

Mark one passage that sharpens the book's central concern and one that complicates it. That tension often reveals more than a quick summary.

Three questions to carry with you

  1. Whose perspective organizes the story, and whose perspective remains outside it?
  2. Which sources or lived experiences carry the author’s central argument?
  3. How does the book change the way you understand its larger subject?
