by Neil Patrick Harris

Published 2018374 pagesISBN 978-0-3164-1986-4

Carter Locke is an orphan and he is running away from his con-artist uncle Sly. He jumps a train to Mineral Wells, a small town. He stays the night at an evil carnival run by B.B Bosso who is also a con-artist (except worse than Sly). He (luckily) runs away from him and his gang because of a warning given by Dante Vernon (a kind illusionist). While seeking Mr. Vernon at Vernon's magic shop! and meets Leila, Mr. Vernon's escape-artist daughter, Theo, who levitates objects, and Ridley, a girl in a wheelchair and the brains of the operation. Together they try to stop Bosso from stealing the largest diamond in the world, along with the help of Izzy and Ollie, twin entertainers. Can Carter and his friends expose Bosso for the criminal he really is?

Beyond its central premise, the book can be read through the connected lenses of Fantasy, LGBTQ+, Fiction. Those themes offer useful points of attention as the characters, ideas, or world develop, especially where the book complicates the expectations of its primary category.

Begin with its place in Fantasy, then notice where the book resists that label.

Try this reading approach

Read for connection, not completion.

Mark one passage that sharpens the book's central concern and one that complicates it. That tension often reveals more than a quick summary.

Three questions to carry with you

  1. Which familiar part of life becomes easier to see through this imagined world?
  2. What rules shape the world, and who benefits from them?
  3. Where does wonder, fear, or possibility change a character’s choices?
