Media and the Presidentialization of Parliamentary Elections

by Anthony Mughan

Published 2001200 pagesISBN 978-0-3338-0018-8

"In theory, parliamentary elections are contests between political parties whose leaders do not have a separate identity from their party in the public eye. Drawing on content analysis of newspaper editorials and television broadcasts as well as on copious survey evidence, Anthony Mughan shows that in the case of Britain this theory no longer holds. The dynamics of parliamentary elections have become more 'presidential' in the sense that the leaders of the major parties now figure more prominently in both media coverage of the campaign and in determining the party that voters choose at the polls." "The presidentialization trajectory in both media coverage and electoral impact is mapped, competing explanations of it evaluated against the available evidence, the electoral importance of the personalities of the party leaders established, the role of various media and types of political programming on television in producing leader effects explored, and the type of voter most susceptible to leader effects identified. A final chapter explores some of the implications of these findings for the practice of parliamentary government and the quality of parliamentary democracy."--Jacket.

Beyond its central premise, the book can be read through the connected lenses of Nonfiction. Those themes offer useful points of attention as the characters, ideas, or world develop, especially where the book complicates the expectations of its primary category.

A more thoughtful way into this book

This guide uses the edition details and category signals above to help you choose deliberately. It does not replace the author's work or a full review.

Good to know

Begin with its place in Nonfiction, then notice where the book resists that label.

Try this reading approach

Read for connection, not completion.

Mark one passage that sharpens the book's central concern and one that complicates it. That tension often reveals more than a quick summary.

Three questions to carry with you

  1. Whose perspective organizes the story, and whose perspective remains outside it?
  2. Which sources or lived experiences carry the author’s central argument?
  3. How does the book change the way you understand its larger subject?
