White as milk, red as blood
the forgotten fairy tales of Franz Xaver von Schönwerth
"In the grand tradition of newly translated and illustrated collections of fairy tales, we present this collection of "lost" German fairy tales by Franz Xaver von Schonwerth, translated by Canadian Shelley Tanaka and illustrated by local artist Willow Dawson. From the Guardian, March 2012: "A whole new world of magic animals, brave young princes and evil witches has come to light with the discovery of 500 new fairytales, which were locked away in an archive in Regensburg, Germany for over 150 years. The tales are part of a collection of myths, legends and fairytales, gathered by the local historian Franz Xaver von Schonwerth (1810-1886) in the Bavarian region of Oberpfalz at about the same time as the Grimm brothers were collecting the fairytales that have since charmed adults and children around the world." Unlike his contemporaries, the Grimm Brothers, who edited and polished the tales they collected, von Schonwerth, a linguist, left his untouched. His books subsequently languished and were lost to time...until now."--
Beyond its central premise, the book can be read through the connected lenses of Fantasy, Fiction. Those themes offer useful points of attention as the characters, ideas, or world develop, especially where the book complicates the expectations of its primary category.

A more thoughtful way into this book
This guide uses the edition details and category signals above to help you choose deliberately. It does not replace the author's work or a full review.
Works well for a focused weekend or a few concentrated sittings.
Begin with its place in Fantasy, then notice where the book resists that label.
Read for connection, not completion.
Mark one passage that sharpens the book's central concern and one that complicates it. That tension often reveals more than a quick summary.
Three questions to carry with you
- Which familiar part of life becomes easier to see through this imagined world?
- What rules shape the world, and who benefits from them?
- Where does wonder, fear, or possibility change a character’s choices?
