The Railway King

by Margaret Mayhew

Published 1979297 pagesISBN 978-0-3851-4603-6

Kirby England, a blunt and rugged nineteenth-century Yorkshireman, was born to poverty in the Dales, but climbed with ruthless ambition to become the rich and famous Railway King. He was surprised when a dying Quaker woman asked him to become guardian to her daughter until she came of age. Hester Gurney didn’t have what normally appealed to Kirby in a woman, though she did have a considerable fortune, which could further his grand schemes of building railways across England. But Hester proved full of spirit and contradictions, and in the end surprised herself and Kirby in ways that changed them both forever. A marvelously romantic tale of the building of the railroads in England in the 1830s and 40s.

Beyond its central premise, the book can be read through the connected lenses of Fiction, Romance. Those themes offer useful points of attention as the characters, ideas, or world develop, especially where the book complicates the expectations of its primary category.

Try this reading approach

Read for connection, not completion.

Mark one passage that sharpens the book's central concern and one that complicates it. That tension often reveals more than a quick summary.

Three questions to carry with you

  1. What does the central character want, and what do they misunderstand about that desire?
  2. Which detail or relationship changes how you interpret the story?
  3. What feeling or question does the book leave with you after the plot moves on?
