by Bernice Thurman Hunter

Published 2001168 pagesISBN 978-0-4399-8895-7

Graham is an orphan who yearns for a real family. The Velma Villa orphanage keeps him safe and warm, but Mother Button does little to make him feel loved. Graham knows from his birth certificate that his birthday is June 2nd, 1935, that he was born in Islington, England, and that his mother's name is Marietta Robbertson. Armed with this information, he runs away again and again to find his mother, but isunsuccessful. When the police catch up with him, he's returned to the Villa. Graham promises himself that he will never give up his dream to find his family. As a grown man, he keeps his promise, and Graham's quest leads him home to his family at last.

Beyond its central premise, the book can be read through the connected lenses of Fiction, Nonfiction. Those themes offer useful points of attention as the characters, ideas, or world develop, especially where the book complicates the expectations of its primary category.

A more thoughtful way into this book

This guide uses the edition details and category signals above to help you choose deliberately. It does not replace the author's work or a full review.

Good to know

Works well for a focused weekend or a few concentrated sittings.

Begin with its place in Fiction, then notice where the book resists that label.

Try this reading approach

Read for connection, not completion.

Mark one passage that sharpens the book's central concern and one that complicates it. That tension often reveals more than a quick summary.

Three questions to carry with you

  1. What does the central character want, and what do they misunderstand about that desire?
  2. Which detail or relationship changes how you interpret the story?
  3. What feeling or question does the book leave with you after the plot moves on?
